Which Condiments Are You Using?
Did you know one of the first (and most prevalent) ingredients found in the everyday condiments we use is high fructose corn syrup?
What is High Fructose Corn Syrup?
High Fructose Corn Syrup is a manufactured sweetener made from corn starch that has been processed to convert some of its glucose into fructose.
Why It Is Bad For You...
During the chemical process when making high fructose corn syrup, the glucose and fructose (which are naturally bound together) become separated. This allows the fructose to go directly into your liver, which creates a factory for fat production within your liver, a process called lipogenesis.
A "fatty liver" leads to obesity causing an array of health issues such as; pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, cancer, and even dementia.
If that isn't enough, high fructose corn syrup also is known to contain chemical contaminants used during the manufacturing process that end up in the food we eat. Not a problem when consumed here and there, but a BIG problem (no pun intended), when eaten regularly or as most Americans do- in excess.
So How Do You Avoid HFCS?
Easily. Just as everything you eat or drink, if it has a label, look at it. The company must list it within the ingredients list, as "High Fructose Corn Syrup."
Mostly found in junk food, but also sneaked in to your everyday items, such as ketchup, mustard, and relish.
So play it safe this 4th of July, and spend the extra dollar for the condiments without the High Fructose Corn Syrup.
Happy 4th of July! Be safe!
